India Successfully Demonstrates Advanced Multi-Layered Ballistic Missile Defence Capability in Series of Flight-Tests

India has successfully conducted advanced multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence flight-tests, demonstrating interception capabilities against long and medium-range missiles both inside and outside the Earth’s atmosphere. The DRDO-led trials on June 10–11 mark a major milestone in strengthening national security and place India among elite nations with advanced missile defence systems.

India has successfully conducted a series of critical flight-tests this week, demonstrating the operational strength of its multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system designed to intercept long and medium-range missiles. With this achievement, New Delhi has joined a select group of nations possessing advanced missile defence capability.

According to the Ministry of Defence, three consecutive flight-tests were carried out on June 10 and June 11 to validate the effectiveness of a multi-layered BMD architecture against incoming hostile missile threats. The trials were specifically aimed at assessing interception capabilities both within and beyond the Earth’s atmosphere, marking a significant advancement in national defence preparedness.

The BMD systems are engineered to intercept incoming long-range nuclear missiles as well as hostile aircraft, including Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS), highlighting their broad operational scope.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully demonstrated multiple critical technologies that significantly strengthen the country’s defence infrastructure against diverse aerial threats. The ministry confirmed that the multi-layered BMD capability was effectively validated through these flight-tests.

The interceptors successfully engaged their respective targets during the trials. These tests have placed the country in an elite category of nations capable of intercepting ballistic missiles up to the intercontinental range, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The Ministry further stated that the maiden flight-test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile–Medium Range was also conducted successfully, marking another milestone in indigenous defence capability development.

Under the BMD programme, India continues to develop systems capable of intercepting hostile missiles at both endo-atmospheric and exo-atmospheric levels. Endo-atmospheric systems operate within the Earth’s atmosphere at altitudes below 100 kilometres, while exo-atmospheric systems are designed to operate in the upper layers of the atmosphere beyond this range.

The flight-tests were observed by senior officials of DRDO and the armed forces, underscoring their strategic importance. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO for the successful demonstration of these critical technologies, recognizing their contribution to strengthening national security.

The successful completion of these tests marks a significant milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to build a robust, multi-layered missile defence shield capable of countering evolving aerial and ballistic threats.
